Adirondack Ice Report 1/10/17
Ice fishing is in full swing! There is fishable ice on most every lake and pond in the Adirondacks with the exception of Lake George and most of Lake Champlain. Hopefully the projected cold temps for this month will put ice on those final stubborn water bodies. The ice on Piseco and the northern basin of Schroon ranges from 6-8" thick at last check. Action for lakers has been pretty good on both. Hunt bait has recently become certified so my favorite minnows will finally be in my bait bucket soon.
While on the ice recently on a particularly bitterly cold day I was reminded of the importance of gear up keep. The person I was fishing with had failed to dry out his traps from his last outing and they had promptly frozen solid notably the reels had become frozen so they couldn't move at all rendering the traps useless. It is so important to mind the small things when fishing. The maintainence of your equipment is paramount to your success. I always make sure to dry my traps out after each outing and check to make sure the hooks are sharp and the leaders aren't frayed.
The crew will be out again soon chasing after lakers and pike. Stay safe on the ice! Keep following the blog for more fishing reports coming soon!
